REUTERS/David GrayLONDON, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Rio Tinto (RIO.L) is finding out just how hard it is to produce low-carbon aluminium. The company's biggest carbon headache is its aluminium business, which last year accounted for 21.1 million metric tons of carbon emissions out of a group total of 30.3 million metric tons. The pilot plant will produce around 6,000 metric tons of alumina per year while cutting carbon dioxide emissions by about 3,000 metric tons per year. Capacity at the low-carbon AP60 smelter, also in Quebec, will be expanded by 160,000 metric tons per year, with commissioning expected in 2026. Rio is investing heavily in recycled aluminium, which can be remelted using just 5% of the power needed to produce virgin metal.

JPMorgan downgrades this aluminum stock ahead of earnings

Analyst Bill Peterson downgraded the stock to neutral from overweight and slashed his price target to $36 from $54 in the runup to its earnings report next week. Despite an approximately 90% correlation between Alcoa shares and aluminum prices over the past decade, Alcoa has underperformed the metal by 7% since April. Aluminum prices as a whole should also be cheaper than previously forecasted in both the fourth quarter and 2024, but may find support in the second half of next year as inventories thin out. Cost pressure could also remain into 2024 given the lower bauxite grade feed for refineries. As a group, Peterson said he remained constructive on aluminum stocks in the long term.

Goldman Sachs chief US equity strategist broke down the bull case for metal and mining stocks. David Kostin points to US companies that will benefit from demand driven by China's reopening. Goldman Sachs analysts forecast a 30% increased in the S&P GSCI, an index that broadly measures the performance of the commodities sector, within the next year. It's not just Kostin who is anticipating immense growth from China's reopening. The International Monetary Fund forecasts China will become the biggest driver of global economic growth over the next five years.
The rebound in China's economy creates an opportunity for U.S. equity investors who can capture that strength by picking mining stocks, according to Goldman Sachs. "We recommend investors own mining stocks, which are levered to China growth through rising metals prices." Metals and mining stocks typically mirror the performance of the index, Goldman said. The firm said mining stocks in general are relatively cheap right now, trading at a 20% discount to the S & P 500. The SPDR S & P Metals & Mining ETF tracks the S & P Metals and Mining Select Industry Index, while the iShares MSCI Global Metals & Mining Producers ETF follows select global metals and mining producers, excluding gold and silver.

A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Tom WestbrookTraders are scaling back bets on U.S. rate cuts, but dialling up expectations for British hikes. On Tuesday, it was bigger-than-expected pay rises that strengthened expectations for the Bank of England to lift rates next month and to continue doing so thereafter. On Wednesday, British inflation data is in focus. On balance, the sheer size of the Bank of England's task of reining in inflation has been supportive for sterling, which hit a 10-month high last week. Implied volatility in the options market suggests traders don't expect sudden changes in the currency's slow grind higher.
